How do you configure a template to monitor a website without assigning it to a node? Is that possible?

to accomplish this, create a node that is "external".

it won't ping or poll the node; then assign the template to that, thus giving you the target of the template.

I agree--njoylif provided the right solution. You could ping or monitor a node, but since it's outside and you don't want to make it a node, WPM is the way to go.
