SolarWinds on dedicated hardware?

I have SW Orion running on physical hardware currently with Windows Server 2012 R2.  Since I'm so far behind on everything, I'm considering rebuilding and starting over.  Is there a specific reason why I need to run SolarWinds on physical hardware instead of a VMWare VM?  Also, I'd like to install fresh to a new platform, temporarily leaving the old platform up and running so we can receive alerts while configuring the new version.  Is this possible from a licensing standpoint?

Orion doesn't require physical hardware, a vm is fine.

You can stand up a fresh server with evaluation licenses for up to 30 days to run them side by side while you move everything across.   Ultimately when you feel like things are ready you just release the licenses from the old server and grab the new keys from the customer portal.
