SAM 5 - HW Polling in VMware

Greetings,

I'm checking out SAM 5.0 and am seeing some strange things in terms of HW monitoring via vSphere, specially in ESXi 4.1 w/Update 2.

For every host, I cannot see the local hard disk status. I can see PSUs, DIMMs, the RAID cache battery, etc.. but disks are missing. This is a rather critical piece of information since disks fail more than any other component. All of our HP hardware shows the same results so far. The drives are all visible in vCenter. Other servers running normal Windows agents are also showing some strange things in terms of PSU discovery but for the most part, do show hard drives, just not PSU status for some models.

I have added the following models (all HP ProLiant): DL 580 G5; DL 380 G5, G6, G7; BL 460c G7, BL 680c G7.

Here's what i have noticed so far:

DL 380 G5 (No singular PSU status, only current total usage)
DL 380 G6 (No local hard drives, no singular PSU status, only current total usage - this is hit and miss, some show, some do not)
DL 380 G7 (No local hard drives)
DL 385 G2 (No PSU status at all)
DL 580 G5 (No hard drives)

Some of this occurs regardless of Windows or VMware, so it's not a configuration issue. We currently use UPD to poll devices and they work just fine and we are very strict with our agent installs and standards for server builds. VMware ESXi 4.1 machines on update 2 also have current firmware.

Is anyone else seeing this?

How are these nodes being polled? Though the vCenter or Directly? You can tell by looking at the VMWare Settings page at the "Poll Through" option pictured below.

I haven't set up anything for vCenter. When I go to that page, the Poll Through option is grayed out. I assume this means directly. Note that I mentioned non-VMware machines are showing the same. I will include some screenshots.

Included are 2 VMware servers and one Windows 2003 R2 server. The SMH on the Windows server does show both PSUs with details so I know the agents are working (plus our NPM instance can poll the OIDs).

We are aware of the issue that physical disks and array controllers are not monitored when polling ESX hosts directly. This issue is being tracked internally as FB103915.

As for your non-ESX hosts, I can see that they're HP servers but I can't determine their polling method. Are these managed via SNMP or WMI? Have you upgraded your SIM agent software on those hosts to the latest version 8.7?

Is there any new status on this issue? We don't use vCenter and it would be great to poll info in vSphere without in on HP Proliant servers.

This is something we're currently working on as mentioned in the "What we're working on post" for SAM. Since this is more of a bug than a major feature it's not called out specifically but is covered under miscellaneous items for the "Additional Hardware Monitoring Support, including IBM MegaRAID Controllers and other Miscellaneous items" line item.

it is my understanding that you have to monitor the host with ICMP only for Poll for VMSphereto work properly and report battery and drive status. I was also told after a 2.15hr call with SolarWinds that CIM is required to poll batter status (not available in ESXi 4.1 or below) and that you had to have IBM Director installed on the ESXi host for correct drive status. I am currently testing this on our IBM 3650 M2 and M3 servers using ESXi 5.5 update 3 which is polling everything correctly on our HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9 servers.
