Want to fully reinstall NPM on a new server...

hi, i'd like to know if this is at all possible.

we have npm 8.5 running a dell server that seems to be having some 'windows' related problems which are in turn causing some small-medium problems on our NPM.

database is on a separate SQL box..

on this forum, i found this guide posted by a user to reinstalling NPM on a new server without losing data:

Old Server
Use the web backup tool with the Orion folder to backup your website
Use the database management tool to backup your SQL database
Make sure you have any manual copies of inhouse modified files

New Server
Install App and new keys from Solarwind
Setup database and system to default (blank)
Use web backup tool to restore website
Use database management tool to restore SQL database
Run setup wizard to attatch to the restored database
Copy the modified files (is you have any) back to their relevant locations

My question is, can i use this same process and use the opportunity to UPGRADE to orion 9.1, instead of reinstalling 8.5 on the new server? WITHOUT losing any data? such as website login accounts and their limitations (we have a lot), historical poll data... has to be like we just upgraded the original box then..

Complete setup on this box include NPM, map maker, report writer, internal and external NetPerfMon sites, the whole shebang.

I suggest upgrading in place, and then perform the migration...

Hi,

When we migrated an installation to a new server we also made sure to copy the following under the Orion Folder: Reports; Maps.

We were on v 9 already so wasnt changing versions straight away. (only a sp)

If you are able to make a second copy of your existing database which is what we did you could then build your new server clean and connect to the new database and run this until you confirm it is working or roll back to your old server.

ok, ill speak to everyone here about that then.

however, can you say exactly what is backed up with the solarwinds backup tool?

i ask because we have lots of custom settings on the website, including about 100 user accounts with custom properties and node limitations for the website, will this surely be preserved?

we're very wary about doing the upgrade on the live box because we had major issues when we were upgrading to 8.5 and support had to get in the mix to help sort things out...

Are you talking about the web backup tool?

When i have restored from the configuration file created by web backup and database all user accounts, settings and views where restored. I believe the some user stuff is stored in the table dbo.WebUserSetting.

I have a similar situation and was wondering if you somebody could give me some advice.

My current installation of Orion products is residing on a W2003 Std. Ed server utilizing SQL Express that was installed with the NPM. To improve performance I want to totally rebuild the server: change my RAID from RAID5 to RAID10 to improve I/O, install W2003 Ent. Ed to add memory in excess of 4GB, install SQL2005 Standard to bypass the 4GB db size limitation, and then re-install all Orion products (NPM, APM, NetFlow, LAN Surveyor, Tools). I have read the migration manual, but it does not cover the situation where the migration of Orion products ends up on the same server (same name and same IP.)

Could you please give me some high level steps on what should be done? My current NPM version is 9.1.0. Should I upgrade to 9.5 before rebuilding and re-installing? How would you proceed with this operation?
