Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
2 new features for Orion
jkeberle
I would love to see the following 2 additions to Orion. Both of which Adventnet's Opmanager does today.
1.) Windows Services monitoring (weather by SNMP or WMI I dont care but that would be a HUGE plus for me. Additionally if you implemented WMI you can take the proactive ability of having ORION restart a service that dies.)
2.) Printer management to the level I can graph the toner in the printer as well as have a nice graphic depicting the operational status of the Printer aka drawer open, or out of paper or paper jam.
These 2 features are the ONLY thing that I loved in Opmanager when I was testing it and I would ***PAY*** to have these features added to Orion if they where done to the quality I would expect.

Please forward your ideas to support@solarwinds.net
While the folks at solarwinds do monitor the forum, I don't know how much of the ideas, wishes, wants actually get forwarded to the developers for consideration.
Additionally, alerts engine can fire internal and external scripts so you might have an action, with service monitoring, to restart the service.
Thanks,

Jkeberle,
With regards to your feature requests:
The Application Monitor Management Pack is an add-on for Orion that monitors windows services/processes via SNMP. This is available today. Additionally, we are working to add the ability to monitor network services (web sites, SQL, etc...) and to monitor via WMI to Orion. I expect to release the network service monitoring first and WMI support a little later.
What specifically are you looking to monitor via WMI besides the windows services?
Regarding the printer management, what types of printers are you using? Are you looking to pull this information directly from the printer? Is it avaialble via SNMP, WMI, or etc..? I would like to learn more about your requirements in this area.
Thanks,
Josh Stephens

We have printers send syslog messages when they are out of paper, ink, or when someone opens them. We can then alert based on those.

Hi Josh,
>I expect to release the network service monitoring first
Any idea how soon ?
For enterprise customers - (particular those who would love to get rid of their WUG - but have to keep it as it can do this)
- service monitoring is the
BIG
issue.
