Help Needed! NT 4.0 Server Support in ORION

We have over 100 NT 4.0 servers still in operation today, and monitoring these old system is critical, because of the high failure rate. I am trying to just get the basics, CPU usage, Hard Drive Stats, Memory Usage etc... And have had no luck. I setup Windows NT 4.0 SNMP and realized it was limited. So I then added the snmp4nt dll as an extension agent, and I can get the data I want back from the standard OIDs for Microsoft for NT

EXAMPLE: .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.1.3.1.1.5.1.4.0 will return free space on c drive

Ok this worked well, but the volume information did not show up on the reference list when I rediscovered the device.

I then tried net-snmp for windows. It installs and runs fine, but it is not giving me the hard drive info either.

Any suggestions? Other than going to MRTG which supports both of these?

It is possible to make SNMP work better by copying across a couple of files from Windows 2000 and making a registry tweak. SolarWinds used to have a link to a download in their knowledge base

I have searched google and found nothing telling me how to make NT 4.0 SNMP run like a windows 2000 snmp agent, which would fix the problem. Any suggestions anyone?

If I can not monitor the NT 4.0 servers, I will have to start researching other tools than ORION.

Just to clarify, the problem is that you can retrieve the data that you specifically request, but Orion isn’t showing it as one of the available OIDs on that device? It seems like some issue with how that extension agent is registered, especially since net-snmp isn’t seeing those OIDs either.

The problem is that SNMP for NT does not support hard drive size etc out of the box. I added the SNMP4NT and linked it to MRTG and that works fine. In MRTG you get to set the OID you want for the hard drive data, with ORION, you go under node details and resouces, and it just shows up or not, and in my case not. I am assuming that is because ORION is expecting the hard drive to be found on .1.3.6.1.2.1.25.2 section, and on NT 4.0 it is under microsoft private address .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.1.3.1.1.5.1 section.

So I am looking for a way to make NT 4.0 populate the right OID values so I can monitor the hard drive info like I do for the other servers. The I just have one set of alerts to perform for low drive space, locked processes etc... If not, I will have to add each custom poller for what I want to monitor and have 2 alerts etc... The reporting will not be as nice either, or as clean looking. Basicly it would be a workaround that would cause me lots of hours of work, I think I will take a look at Microsoft SMS first before I go that route.

Now once you have that setup you can always use Orion custom poller to monitor all those OID's
