Virtualization Monitoring

Setup the Vcenter server and credentials. System polled and found the Vsphere 4.11 Datacenter and clusters, etc. When I clicked on Data Center it asked to manage it and I said "no", shouold have said yes but was not thinking just monitoring. Unable to get the full virtual picture now. Tried deleting the vcenter node and re-adding but no luck. Any ideas on how to add/manage the Data Center back as a managed node. Failing that how to remove the Vcenter server and all the virtual pieces under it then recreate by re-adding the Vcenter server so have it recreate properly.

Once you add the vCenter to APM the datacenters and clusters should be automatically added. If they are not it's most likely that the ESX credentials you provided to APM don't have have sufficient permissions in vCenter to access those branches.

I did not use credentials for the ESX hosts but used only the vcenter credentials and am relying on the Vsphere API. The issue is one where the DataCenter node in the tree is unmanaged, since I choose not to manage it when first clicked on after the initial polling. Since then it is not possible to manage the datacenter part of the virtual infrastructure, there is no way to choose to make it a managed node nor does removing the vcenter node fix the issue. Re-adding the vcenter server as a managed node does not seem to cause a new virtual infrastructure tree to be created, the same tree returns with the same issue with a datacenter portion still unmanaged and not way to resolve it. Looked in the DB and it shows as unmanaged, updated it to managed and turns green for short time then returns to unmanaged.

I am willing to remove the vcenter node and start the virtual part over but tried once and it did not resolve the issue. Seems that the data is stored in the DB when removing the vcenter node should propagate down and cause the removal of the nodes underneath it that depend on it, although if they are brought in as managed node this would be problematic since they would lose all information and monitoring. If there is a way to flip some bits in the DB I am game for that as well but do not know all the underlying DB model so would need some guidance.

All of my "data centers" are unmanaged in the DB.

Did you create a separate user in VC for NPM? If so, when you assigned the rights for that user did you propagate the user permissions to all of the child objects? When you go to the permissions tab for the DataCenter in VC you should see the user in the permissions tab as defined in the VC object

Just using an acct for testing that has rights. Just trying to see what if any information that the datacenter would provide me if it was managed. If it provides additional content that I could use then I would like to be able to manage it. I see all the other objects and they are green just looking for what it would provide if it was managed. I am working through a comparison test of products and am looking to see what it can do.

If there is no useful information content in the datacenter node than it is not an issue but the documentation is sparse on it and the reports do not populate with data although not everything is setup (SNMP) since I do not control the farm. Looking for deep level information if it is produced.
