Clarification on Memory Utilisation

Hi,

I am monitoring Linux server using NPM. I see following information for Linux box

Physical Memory Utilization - 67%

Real Memory (RAM) Utilization - 99% (it is red in color)

Swap Space Utilization - 3%

I thought we had only two type of memories - Physical memory (RAM) onboard the computer and Swap Space that is allocated from hard disk. What is Real Memory then?

Hi,

We had the same confusion when we first started using Solarwinds with our Red Hat servers and after logging a ticket with Solarwinds the answer we got back was that one is indeed the Physical memory usage but the other is the amount of memory being consumed by the running processes. I can't recall if they said it was because of how SNMP reports back the usage or how Solarwinds interprets it.
