Orion v8 Release Info
Josh_Stephens
As many of you know, we've been hard at work on Orion v8 and we're getting close to a release. We'd like to make sure that our forum members are always one step ahead, so here's some information.
As of now, our scheduled release date for Orion v8 is December 15th, 2006. We are planning to begin external beta testing in mid-November. Here is a list of the key features that are included in this release:
Custom MIB Support - ability for the user to specify custom OIDs for Orion to collect data from. We are going to include several custom schema files as well as give you the ability to specify the OID by typing it in directly or browing to the MIB within the SolarWinds MIB database.
SNMPv3 Support - enhance, secure, encrypted version of SNMP
Node Tree Grouping within System Manager - group by vendor, type, etc...
Advanced Alert Engine - ability to define dependencies, alert escalations, sustained state alerts, and etc...
SNMP Trap Receiver - ability to receive, log, and take actions on SNMP Traps.
This is by no means a complete list, but these are the big ones.
Additionally, we're going to follow-up quickly with another new release that will add an additional set of new features. We are currently working to nail down this list of features and set a release date for this new version.
Please let us me know if I can provide any additional information or assistance.
Sincerely,
Josh Stephens

Thanks for the info, Josh. I know some comments about the roadmap for Orion have been quite sharp lately, and it's good to see that SW is listening to the concerns of customers. You truly have a great product, and with the news of the pending release of V8 and the Netflow module, it sounds like it's about to get a lot better.

Josh,
Thanks for the News on v8!
Is IPv6 support planned for v8? I have a couple Military networks that are going to start requiring IPv6.
I doubt that they themselves will be ready by their own deadlines, but I would like our stuff to be ahead of the game if possible.
Also, Put Segovia on the Beta Testing Program.

I hope that we will have in new version possibility to monitor RFlow/SFlow or IPfix...
This is something that is absolutly required in today networks.

I've been waiting years for this, would love to be part of the beta group if possible.

Custom MIBs + Netflow = all my eggs in one basket, something I've wanted for a very long time.
THANK YOU for keep us informed.

Will it be possible to show application status on maps in v8?

With the custom MIB will orion be able to pull temprature probes so we can monitor our teprature through orion? this would be an awesome function since right now we have to use MRTG just to monitor and have a long record of temprature in our datacenter. Also monitoring smnp capable PDU's would be a great feature.

Hi Josh.
Sounds great all the new features...
... one comment though ..
AD integration does't work (I belive there is a bug ID for the issue) ... it works for personal AD accounts (and the everyone "account") but not for real AD groups !
This is a problem for us when we have to make 10 identical personal account insted of just one group account, this way we end up with too many account, cause we got lot's different AD groups.
Will this bug be fixed in V8 ?

I'd just like to say I'm glad you're planning on releasing in December with the custom mibs as I know a lot of us have been waiting a long time for that. I'm glad to hear you're going to follow up with more updates soon but that you didn't wait for those other features to be ready before you did this update.

Julian,
That is being worked on. Just not sure on a release date yet.

I would like to suggest that you can hear audible alerts from the webmonitoring pages as this is what operations departments would use. Most servers have no sound cards. This would help with Solarwinds running in a virtual environment as well.

Any word on Orion Beta 8? Have other people received information yet?

Good news for CN users.

Alterego,
I have an Alpha copy, so I guess the public beta won't be too long

I have heard that V.8 is scheduled for release around mid December ( I heard this in the training class in Dallas\Ft. Worth). If it hasn't even made it to beta yet how is that possible. The concern here is that it will be 'Rushed to Market' and be full of bugs.

will V8 have the ability to monitor HTTPS?

Are we getting a list of New items that are going to be released so when it does come out we can test it before we place in production? Would like to see what I need to look for and how much change we are really looking at?
thanks,

Does anyone know if the SNMP Trap Receiver will be able to listen on multiple ports?
Josh_Stephens
Lots of questions in this thread, so I'll try to answer a few and anything that I've missed please feel free to re-post:
SNMP Trap Receiver - for this first version, will only listen on UDP port 162 (standard port for SNMP traps). Can you help me to understand the need for it to liston on multiple ports?
Release Date - 12/15/06 is the official release date and the date that all of the marketing data and the eval will be available on the website. We'll be working to upgrade the licenses for existing customers over the next several days after that.
Monitoring of temperature probes - in most cases, yes. So long as the probe as a decent SNMP agent. For devices such as Cisco, Dell, and etc we've seen no problems thus far.
Monitoring of HTTPS - not in this release but being reviewed for the future. Are you asking to be able to access the site via HTTPS or monitor an HTTPS site for availability or am I completely missing it?
IPv6 - not in this release, but we are reviewing the requirements for adding support for this as well as trying to access the customer demand. Are any of you actively using IPv6?
Thanks,
Josh Stephens

Hi Josh,
SNMP Trap Receiver - for this first version, will only listen on UDP port 162 (standard port for SNMP traps). Can you help me to understand the need for it to liston on multiple ports?
Some Application and VoIP/SIP Servers do not run as the root user and they need to use a target port above 1024 for sending traps. I've also got some that dont want to interfere with the OS' snmp client so they have a second install under /usr/local and also prefer to send traps to a different port.
Thanks for the update

FWIW, if you want to play in the US Gov't space in the near future, IPv6 is a must. IIRC Congress mandated the DoD & OMB to move to IPv6 in the late '07 to early '08 time frame. The rest of the US Gov't is slated to march down the same path shortly thereafter.

I'm looking for the download to upgrade my Orion 7.8.5 SLX to v8 but don't see it anywhere in the download section after I'm logged in. The homepage says the eval is available for download so it must be released I'm guessing.
Anybody have a clue? Did we not make the 12/15/06 release date after all?
aLTeReGo
Any idea if the Application Monitor add-on for Solarwinds will be compatible with v8 when it is released or will we have to wait for a new version?
btp
A couple of questions regarding 8.0:
I finally got the custom MIB to work - but it is painfully to scan a device for the OID tree, even the switch that is directly connected to the server (several minutes). Is this normal?
I don't seem to get in any data from a particular device. It should graph my rf level (radio), which is a negative value. Tips here?
All my SNMP polling was changed from v1 to v2c - and a lot of my gear doesn't support this. I then have to manually edit all the nodes back to v1. Bugfix?
I tried to change SNMPVersion from "2" to "1" in Database Manager. When I return to the NPM nothing has changed. Any hatches to be aware of?
Otherwise it looks promising...

I thought the same...
We want to install aswell but the eval is only SL200 so we can't even use that for 30 days until they sort out the keys.
