Monitoring Unix applications with scripts

I am a complete noob when it comes to this so bare with me. We have been tasked to monitor a new application that is to be put into production and it is in a mixed environment Win/*nix. What will be needed from the Unix team in order for us to successfully monitor their Unix applications?

I am assuming they need to setup a generic account/login credentials for us to use.

What else will they need to provide?

Is this a commercial application or something internally developed? On both the Windows/Unix servers I would recommend enabling SNMP and running the "Find Processes, Services, and Windows Performance Counters Wizard to create a custom application template. If your Unix team needs specific performance metrics you'll want to ensure that perl is installed on the server should they need to write any custom scripts to extract the data. Below are some of our latest Linux templates for APM.

Coming from someone who has had to setup monitoring on Windows and *nix applications, alterego is on the right track, process and service/daemon monitoring will be very helpful. I would also look into setting up log file monitoring on those servers, most applications write events to some sort of log. Work with the team to help figure out what the app writes in the log when there is something wrong and monitor for that.
