APM Functionality question

Hi there, I'm considering adding APM to my NPM installation but I had a question about windows process monitoring -- can you configure APM to monitor *any* windows process, besides the "name-brand" stuff (SQL, IIS, etc.)?

I have a need to monitor a number of in house developed server apps and am wondering if APM will do the trick.

Yes, APM can do this. In fact, that is one of the primary features of the application. You may browse any machine for currently running processes, both SNMP and WMI. You can then aggreagate the detected processes and services into either new or existing applications or templates. Works like a charm and is quick. The only requirement is that you be familiar with what processes/services/ports are associated with your custom apps.

Prior to version 2.5 this was called "APPBuilder". For some reason SolarWinds did away with the name in version 2.5, but the functionality is certainly there.

That depends on what yo uare monitoring

Someone else can correct me if necessary, but in general, WMI will tell you anything SNMP can tell you, plus performance related metrics related to Windows processes. I sometimes set up two applications, one using SNMP, the other using WMI, and compare the results.

On Windows Servers, WMI provides a lot more information than SNMP. Microsoft publishes all of its data to WMI, but it provides only cursory support to SNMP.
