Linux client monitoring (SSH Needed?)

Hello,

In monitoring Linux clients we are installing netsnmp, but does my Solarwinds account actually need ssh permissions to my Linux servers if we monitor using snmp? Is there something that having ssh permissions to a Linux server will allow it to do that netsnmp will not do?

SNMP (version 1 and 2) uses community strings, a read-only and a read write. These are a simple string, that is passed in clear text across the network between the SNMP poller and the device's SNMP agent. As long as the community-strings match, the SNMP poll is granted access.

SNMP v3 how ever uses an encrypted communication, based around a user with optional Authentication and Privacy / Encryption stings. If the SNMP details match between poller and device the SNMP poll is granted access.
