sending snmp traps from Oracle enterprise manager to sam

I'm not a solarwinds guy, I'm an Oracle DBA, so bear with me if I've made fundamental mistakes here.

If I'm reading the SAM documentation correctly (which is no certain thing) it appears to come preloaded with a large variety of SNMP mibs, including oracle's (I least I think I saw that).

If this is correct, the only thing I should need to is configure the proper parameters in Oracle Enterprise manager 12c (OEM) notification methods.

I've defined the name of the host to send the trap to, the port number (I've tried both 161 and 162). There's also parameter called 'SNMP Community' which I've left as the default of 'public'.

However, test snmp traps are failing to appear on the console.

If anyone has a pointer to specific documentation on how to integrate OEM and solarwinds, I would appreciate a pointer in that direction.

It was just that simple for me to see traps from OEM, themadzymurgist. You will want to use 162 for your trap port number. If your SolarWinds Trap Service is started on your Orion server, and your filter is set correctly to not exclude the messages you are looking for on the Traps viewer page, you should see them.

Assuming that I only have access to the Solarwinds environment via a web based console (which happens to be true), how can I determine if the trap service is started? and I can't seem to find a page/screen directly related to traps. We have the NPM and SAM products installed (at least there are tabs for both those products). I don't see anything on the summary pages for either product that seems to relate directly to traps. Under the HOME page, there is an 'Events' tab, which seems like the most likely place, but I'm not seeing anything appear there.

I know these are kinda basic questions, but I have no real experience with this particular monitoring solution and our normal solar winds guy is not present at the moment.

If you only have web console access you might be able (depending on your level of access)

to go to Settings -> All Settings -> Orion Service Manager

To access the Traps Screen click on "Alerts and Activity" (third screen shot below)

themadzymurgist - looks like jvb has given you the breadcrumbs for checking your Traps Service state and finding the event viewer. I will add a few more things since I made some assumptions about your access in my original reply. If you turn the trap event viewer filters to effectively show "all" traps received from all sources, and still see nothing, it may be that no traps from anywhere are being directed to your SolarWinds server yet. If that's the case, you might also confirm (you may want to anyway) with your Network / Security folks that UDP/162 (SNMP traps traffic) is being allow through the network from your OEM server to your SolarWinds server. Additionally, if you want to do more than just view the trap events directly through the web console events viewer (e.g. send an email or take other alert action) when a trap is received you will still need someone to configure the SNMP traps alert utility which isn't available through the console (sadly!) but only when logged into the SolarWinds server. The web-console Advanced Alert Manger won't allow you to alert on traps received, only the utility will.
