count of SQL databases on a sql server

Is there a monitor or report that will monitor the count of databases on a sql server or cluster? I would like to be able to monitor all sql instances on a cluster or at least be able to find out how many databases are running on a cluster or SQL server without having to open sql manager and counting them.

Thanks in advance if this has been done or in the works.

You could create a SQL Server monitor that executes this query:

SELECT count(1) FROM sys.databases

This will return the number of databases on a server (both user and system databases). You could then uses the statistic of this component montior for reporting/alerting/whatever.

Tried to create that and well it did not work for me not sure if I did it correclty in chance you can upload it to the content sharing section with some directions?

Was the error an access-denied error?

If it was, the database admin may need to grant the SQL Server credential you're using access to the sys.databases system-level view.

Just after writing that, I remembered you said you had access to Microsoft SQL Manager / Management Studio.

You can check if you have access:

1. Run SQL Manager/Management Studio.

2. Connect to the database with your credential.

3. Click New Query.

4. Type SELECT count(1) FROM sys.databases

5. Click Execute.

If you get the number of databases back as your result, you've got access.
