Monitor is a service/process that runs intermittently?

We have a service/process that runs intermittently when required on a server.  If this runs, the developers would like me to setup an monitor in APM which will alert if the service runs for more than 30 mins. As its a process which is designed to run to perform a function and then stop again.

I dont think this level of complexity is possible?

 

Any ideas?

Hello,

you can use WMI monitor for this (Custom Component Monitors -> WMI Monitor). Put this query to WQL Query field:

SELECT ElapsedTime FROM Win32_PerfFormattedData_PerfProc_Process WHERE Name = 'NAME_OF_YOUR_PROCESS'

and set thresholds for statistics to appropriate values. Statistic in this case is run time in seconds for specified process. So for 30 minutes you should set warning or critical threshold to 1800 and set alert to warning or critical status of this monitor.

Edit: Note then when process won't be active, monitor will be in "unknown" state.
