AppInsight fo Exchange: Messages queued for submission

hi guys,

on one of our exchange mailbox store servers the counter, messages queued for submission counter is at 80,

and has not gone down, has any one else experienced this?

this Microsoft article, states that there is an issue with this counter and that it should not be used for "health checks"

Hmm.. I can't say I've ever seen this occur. I do find this interesting as even SCOM Monitors this metric for Exchange 2007-2010, but I can't argue with that KB article. My suggestion If this is occurring in your environment is to remove the warning and critical thresholds entirely to ensure you aren't alerted. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I'll see that Bronx gets this posted as a KB in our own system should others also be affected.

I see it on one of ours too. I stumbled across the KB article as well when I went looking to understand what it is/was, and why it was alerting. Definitely interesting that Microsoft say not to use it...

The MS KB article also notes that the counter is reset when the service is restarted. The error apparently occurs only when a message is submitted multiple times (which generally would happen only if the original submission failed to deliver on the first attempt). With that in mind merely setting the thresholds higher may not guarantee elimination of the problem, as a subsequent service restart followed by a delivery issue could still result in new (high) counter values being created. Of course, the current value will continue to increase if such multiple-submission scenarios are encountered. It may be desirable to set those values at astronomically high values to ensure no alerts are generated ever.
