Integrated Syslog Server

I think this is a great additon to the Orion site. I do have 1 major concern. How many syslogs per second/minute can the syslog server handle? If the Orion server is already monitoring devices and it needs to handle alot of syslogs I can see where the server performance might severly degrade.

The admin doc says it supports "thousands of messages per minute depending on the speed of the server and database server." That's not really to clear to me.

Before I turn it on and point my 300 devices to it I need a better understanding of this. Has anyone turned this on enterprise-wide? What are you seeing?

I've turned on Syslog for a couple of devices for testing and it seems to work OK currently I'm only accepting errors, alerts and emergency notifications but I don't know what overhead the syslog server has for discarding the un-required sys log entries.

It would be good for Solarwinds to put some figures on memory and processer utilisation and probably more importantly the amount of disk space used.

I have been running the syslog server for over a month (version 7.6 beta) without issue. We have 320 nodes and over 1500 elements. Of those nodes approximately half are using the SW box as a syslog server.

That was my concern as well in a previous post.

Our current syslog server is receiving in excess of 20k messages/hour, and once we log all of our devices, I suspect this will be around 40k/hr. I was reading the on-line admin guide for 7.7, but there is no mention even made about the syslog module. I'm hoping there's some way to install 7.7 without the Syslog integration.

Currently we just do a web(.asp) query our Syslog server's database from the Orion server, so the info is gathered on another server, but available on the Orion web page.

Yes, the 7.7 install will allow you to not install the Syslog Service when running through the Configuration Wizard.

Well...I upgraded last night and pointed about half our devices to the server and it looks good so far. I do not notice any slowness. The CPU/Memory on the server looks good. I haven't point any core stuff including firewalls to it yet...maye next week.
