How to monitor applicaitons for a system with multiple IP's?

I am curious how I can monitor applications for a system with multiple IP's? Many of our systems have multiple public IP's assigned to them and have different applications available on those IP's. How can I assign which IP's the applications are monitored on?

For example:

I have a server with FTP running on it's 2nd public IP and I want to be able to use an FTP Port 21 monitor for that 2nd IP on that server. How can I do this?

Hi, Byron.

If a device/computer has more than one IP address, you could add each IP as a separate node, but that would mess up your views/reports/top xx resources because of the duplicate data collected from the same system.

So don't do that. :-)

Instead, pick one IP address as a 'primary' and add that as a regular Orion node. Add the remaining IP addresses as external nodes. External nodes skip all network performance data collection and polling tasks, but allow you to assign applications to them.

Thanks for the response. This is a less than favorable solution. Going forward having an option to assign it to an IP other than the primary system IP would be preferable. This would make it so that I don't have to populate my system with Psudo-Nodes.

I am picturing an option in the application or component to "override template" for the IP assignment where the template would assume the primary IP of the system unless you were to override it. By overriding it you could then assign the monitor to a different IP.

Ok, I have done as you suggested and added the 2nd interface of the node as an External Node and then assigned my application template to the node.

The problem is that when I go to the node in NPM, the node view doesn't show anything other than the "Node Detail" element. I don't see the the "Applicaitons" element that I see on other nodes with application assigned to them.

It's not just you. I'm also not seeing any resources on the Node details view for my external node. This smells like a bug so let me talk to dev and verify.

Hi Byron. Dev confirmed this as an Orion NPM bug, and as far as I can tell it's been fixed in the release of NPM they are working on. I'm sorry that I can't give you a specific date for the fix, though.
