Migration of one solrwinds orion to another orion server.

Hi All,

Here is what the task has been assigned to me...!! We have a new company got acquired with our company. so we have decided to migrate their Solarwinds orion to our solarwinds orion. do you guys have any idea about it. how to begin the task? and what all the requirements to be needed and let me know how to proceed further with this migration...!! please help me with your valuable answers.

Hey Sunayan,

I dug around for a couple of minutes, the only thing I was thinking was if there was a way to merge your databases. Unfortunately that is not an option (See Merge two SolarWinds databases - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support )

There is this article that someone had the same question (Combining two NPM instances into one ), but i don't think thats the answer you are probably looking for. The best way is to probably open a support ticket to see if they have any ideas. Sorry mate!

Hi Sunayan,

Depends what you're requirements are. For example, I don't know of a way to merge historical data between two different deployments.

If you're not fussed about including their historical data with your existing deployment I'd do the following:

1. Get both deployments to the same version of NPM.

2. Configure their devices to use your Orion server - most devices can have at least 2 snmp servers configured so you can leave the existing config in place and continue polling from their Orion server until you're ready to switch it off.

3. Run device discovery on your Orion server - verify all their devices are being polled successfully from your SW server.

4. Export any users, custom reports, alerts etc that the other company use and import these to your deployment.

5. Stop polling from the old SW server and remove any old snmp config you left in place at step 2.

You might be able to leave their deployment in place and configure it as a 2nd polling engine. You'd need to contact Solarwinds support/sales about this as there are additional costs and licenses involved with secondary polling engines.

You can look at the EOC (Enterprise Operations Console ) that basically give you one dashboard for each of your Solarwinds installs. Particularly useful if those are in separate distinct locations. Otherwise you can transfer node management from on install to the other but you'll lose statistics and customizations. (hint: Ensure your devices are allowing polling from a different IP or subnet). Base on the number of managed nodes, the task will be more or less time consuming...
