Mass Discovery

We are on the Eve of a mass discovery, probably over 1500. Initially we will be adding these in as just ICMP (up/down). Later we want to come back and enable SNMP communications on the devices in small portions to then allow us to monitor these devices further.

At this point we have seen that adding the SNMP information in the web console is obviously time consuming, but when initiating a re-discover, the device hostname does not populate and stays listing the IP address, further requiring individual device updating.

We have tried mass delete, enabled SNMP on the devies, and then bulk upload of those IP address which works great, but are there any other ways to accomplish this with out deleting from the database?

Once you've enabled SNMP, you'll get the sysname from the device. I assume this is what you want it to be called in NPM? If so, have someone with a little database savvy connect to your NetPerfmon database and run a query like this one:

update nodes set caption = sysname where sysname is not null and sysname != ''

*Disclaimer: I haven't tested this query; use transactions and roll it back if it doesn't do what you expected. Always back up first!

thanks for the reply. I will take that query into consideration.

In the coming months we will have a "sand box" so to speak of the SQL database, an exact copy that's not live, so we can test queries without harming the live environment. This will be one that is high on the list to make our upcoming tasks easier.
