Remote Ping

We have a half dozen devices on a remoter site that's managed by an NPM at a different site which works well.

We have a problem at the moment in that an app is running slow and the networks being blamed I've configured a HTTP user experience monitor to one of the devices at the remote site which is reporting what we expected to see but when we do a manual ping from the same device the ping response time is 50% less than the HTTP user experience and we are aware why this could be but what I would like to do is configure an APM monitor on this remote device to ping the app server in question so we have comparable stats with the HTTP monitor.

Is it possible to do this kind of remote ping with NPM or APM?

A major reason for the differences you're seeing between an HTTP Component monitor and basic ping test is the level of complexity and overhead associated with HTTP that simply doesn't exist with ICMP, so it's not surprising that your ICMP response time is 50% lower than your HTTP component monitor test. To see the variance between a local and remote locations performance I would recommend using our Synthetic End User Monitor or IPSLA products which allow your to configure comparable tests against from multiple locations.  

Neither NPM or APM have the ability to execute remote monitoring in the manor you describe. You would need to deploy an APM or NPM at each location to perform local monitoring. You may perhaps be able to write a Unix/Linux or PowerShell script in APM to meet your requirements, but I'm not aware of any such script that exists currently.
