Though the SQL Server is up and available, AppInsight for SQL reports it as only "Critical" or "Down". I am curious what metrics are used to determine the fully functional SQL Server is "Down".
Can you identify for me the "critical" processes and Windows Event Log messages?
Critical Process & Services
Windows Events related to SQL. Critical events (red triangle) will cause application to appear in a "Down" state"
..
Also, when you say failed SQL agent jobs "may" cause the application to appear critical, can you tell me when they will and when they won't?
Failed SQL Agent jobs will report as "Critical"
Critical processes not running will cause the application to be in a "Down" state. Also, critical Windows Event Log Messages related to the monitored SQL instance can also cause the application to appear to be in a "Down" state. Any/all collected metrics that have warning or critical thresholds that are exceeded will cause AppInsight for SQL to appear to be in a Warning or Critical state. Also, SQL agents jobs that fail may also bubble up to to the overall application status as and cause the application to appear critical.

You have been a great help but I have one more question.
I went through and edited a bunch of thresholds to attempt to head off most of the spurious "critical" warnings. However, after making these changes, the status of the "Application Availability" changed to unknown and I have no idea why. Sorry if this is a question covered in a million other posts, but is there a log I can check to find out why the status is "Unknown"?
