Exchange 2007 Storage Groups offline

From Solarwinds SAM 5.2, how do I monitor whether my storage groups are online? More importantly, how can I be alerted when a Storage Group goes offline. I'm new to the SAM setup. We were using System Center Ops Mgr, but I like the real time info, graphs, etc that I get from Solarwinds that SCOM wouldn't give me. Help!!

There are a couple of different ways to monitor the status of a Storage Group in Exchange 2007. The first method is pretty simple but very definitive. Create a new mailbox in each storage group you want to monitor. Then configure a MAPI User Experience Monitor in SAM for each account you created in the previous step This will ensure that each storage group is available, and able to receive email. It's a far more definitive method than SCOM. The other way is to monitor the Storage Groups via WMI or WIndows Performance Counters similar to SCOM. You will need to create your own using the "Browse For Components" Wizard under SAM Settings. You can use the "Exchange 2007 Mailbox Role Counters (Advanced)" template that's included with SAM as well, and update to reflect your database names.
