Does Solarwinds NPM need to know the ip or host name of the DNS server to utilize DNS ?
No it is going to use your server DNS settings
Can you explain more what you need, please.
Depend on how you use it?
For example UDT, I believe it will use of your server's NIC DNS settings to query the IP address of the end hosts.
For NPM, if you are adding network devices by SNMP Polled, the hostname is typically queried through SNMP data.
no. It will be up to the Server (where Solarwinds application are installed) to resolved those IP addresses that you have added. If the server itself via command line cannot resolve it then SW application will not show the hostname. Possibly put it on the hostfile of check the DNS settings of your server.
Thank You - All
What I was looking for : How does SW NPM query the DNS server ?
Is there a configuration page where you insert the ip or DNS server ?
ie
for instance- similar to the email server ip or hostname that required for email to be sent ?
SolarWinds will use the DNS server configured on the server's management interface. If open a command prompt and type 'nslookup', whichever server is identified as the default server will be where the DNS lookups will go. There are no configurations steps in NPM itself for DNS.
