Auto Populate Custom Properties Fields

Hi all,

I was wondering if such as feature exists or if there's a practical workaround. I know this has been discussed before in the last couple years but I didn't find what I'm looking for, I'm aware that we can utilize alerts to fill in missing fields, but that is after the node has been created, besides, I have hundreds of sites and new things open or old ones move or close all the time which makes alerts impractical. What I'm looking for is something to automatically populate other custom fields as soon as I type in a value for a certain unique field like a site ID, serial or something while I'm adding the new node. I appreciate your suggestions and recommendations.

Existing feature = no.

Practical workaround = "practical" is a subjective term. As you mentioned, there are ways to accomplish this and it appears your read those pasts. If you don't consider those as "practical," then no, there aren't any of those either.

For that kind of logic, your best bet is to create a separate web form with all that logic and functionality, and then use the Orion SDK to populate Orion when the user hits "enter" - including scanning and adding the node if you want it all as part of a "add node" operation.

@deverts Thank you for your reply, yes, I read what I could find, I knew about alerts and groups but none actually accomplish what I want since the node would have to already be created, and if I did apply them it would be hard since there are just too many sites which is why I said impractical.

I probably won't go that far for this purpose but I think it's a good idea, thank you! I hope that this will be added as a built-in feature to Solarwinds sometime, I bet many users will appreciate such capability and it does not seem something too hard to do considering all the great things that Solarwinds is already capable of doing.

You can autopopulate *groups* based on different criteria such as custom properties. Then, from admin guide (alert part of below is out of scope for your question--step 6 is part you are interested in):

Edit group properties or change the group members

You can edit the properties of an existing group, or add and remove objects. If you remove an object from

the group and that object has triggered an alert while it was a member of the group, the alert continues to

be active until it's acknowledged.

1. Click Settings > All Settings in the menu bar.

2. In the Node & Group Management grouping, click Manage Groups.

3. Select a group you want to edit, and click Edit Properties.

4. Click Advanced to set the Status Rollup Mode, how often objects refresh in the group, or any custom

properties.

To create custom properties, open Manage Custom Properties in a new tab.

5. To add or remove the group members, click Add & Remove Objects.

You can also change group members directly on the Manage Groups page.

6. Manually or automatically select objects for this group.

l Select the check box next to the object to select object manually.

l Automatically select group members based on shared properties by clicking Add Dynamic

Query and creating conditions.

Click Preview to verify that the dynamic query is selecting the intended objects.

7. Edit an existing query by selecting a dynamic query, and clicking Edit Dynamic Query.

8. To remove an object or query from a group, select the query or object, and click Remove.

9. Click Submit to save the edited objects and queries.

10. Click Submit again to save the group.

You can use "Import custom property values" option in manage nodes page. it will ask you to upload a simple excel.

Get your data sorted properly in excel, import it, It will automatically map the columns & ask you to match with respective custom property.

Hi tigerr

You can bulk update custom properties via an Export/Import process. Once all the nodes are added you Export the Custom Properties to CSV, update all the fields in bulk using copy/paste and then upload the CSV to SolarWinds updating all those Nodes in one go.

Like you've mentioned you can have alerts checking your entire estate constantly for a particular condition, which in turn updates the custom property. Some customers use things such as Hostname or IP to determine the Site Location, and then, in turn, use the Site Location to add additional information. It does need some forward thought and planning, but it can be effective. However, nothing beats the good old fashion CSV. There is also the option of using the API to pull information from an external CMDB Source which pulls that information to update the custom properties.

-- You can create a group, based on the site name - Like XYZ Parent Group

Whether site is custom property of node to identify the location of node. Your site's node will auto appear into group, no need to add them manual. once node will remove from monitoring it will auto remove

if you exclude the any device from this group you can use the below snap.

And then Save the condition of group.

However my moto was never to create a custom property and use Excel import

I am using the different methods to populate the location field and will

let you once testing done
