Additional polling engine for separate network

Here is my scenario:

I have a Level 3 edge router that I need to monitor. I have our Solarwinds server located in one of our data centers. The Level 3 edge router will only allow access from a specific IP on the private network. Can I setup a small separate polling engine in that private network that will send alerts to our main Solarwinds system?

I'm currently working with a client that has multiple pollers, all in different network segments, and different domains. They are all able to talk to each other, but firewall rules have to be made. In this case, we have to make sure that TCP ports 17777 and 17778 are open between the pollers, and TCP ports 1433 and 1434 are open between the polling engine and the database server. This will ensure the traffic will be able to get from the poller to the database, and that the pollers can communicate with each other. This will then allow for alerting, reporting, etc on that device. The problem is that you have to buy that additional poller. And for 1 device, it may not justify the cost. You may also want to think about opening specific firewall rules, if possible for ICMP, SNMP, traps, and syslog, to that device from the Orion server, and vice versa. You would then need to just have routing setup for that specific device.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. I don't want to spend thousands to monitor a single node/interface. The biggest thing I'm looking for is availability via ICMP. There are 2 datacenters that can be reach via this Level 3 router/network. I want to run a ping for availability/latency and alert if the latency spikes or the site is not reachable. Is there some way that I could create a powershell script that would send an alert to Solarwinds?

I'm not sure of a powershell monitor. I know one way would be a firewall rule allowing ICMP traffic from that router to the poller and back. Another might be to have a system that runs maybe a copy of Engineer's or Standard Toolset with a ping monitor on that device. It would have to be the alerting point in that case though. To use SAM, you'd have to create something to ping the node, log the response time, then a log monitor to look at the values and set thresholds based on the reported values. It may be possible, but you'd have to use a combination of efforts. First a script or batch file on a system that can access the device that could ping it, then a file monitor to read the values.

SolarWinds currently doesn't have the idea of a "probe" (ie: a small poller for small uses like this). However, remember that you CAN send messages into SolarWinds via trap or syslog.

So if you have a remote box that is pinging your edge router and can send a syslog message to your core poller, you could use the Syslog rules to generate an alert from that.
