Hardware advise
michael4702
Hi,
I have just purchased the full unlimited version of Orion.
What hardware do you recommend for it.
I know its a "how long is a piece of string" question but my main concern is backing up the SQL database!?!?
How do other people back up there databases?
Many thanks.
Mike,

I use a Dell PE2850 with 4GB of RAM and 2.8Ghz CPU and it works fine for 5,000 Elements. However I have the SQL backend sitting on our SQL Cluster. The database is backed up using Veritax Backup Exec 9.0 along with all of our other SQL databases.
Questions
1-How many elements do you intend to monitor?
2-Do you intend to have the SQL Server on the Same Server?

We use a Dell 2850 with 2gb of RAM and a Dual 3ghz Xeon. This is just for the Orion frontend and admin the database sits on it's own box similar to above we are monitoring around 3500 elements.
What I will say is that since we moved the database from the same box to a different box Orion seems to be responding a lot quicker.

With well over 4000 elements monitored and having been up for well over a year our DB is currently about 11GB. We use a IBM X346 with dual 2.8Ghz Xeons and 2.5GB of memory.
The SQL server is on a seperate IBM X346 that is a shared resource running on a similar chassis with 4GB of memory. Neither box has ever shown any sign of resource issues, but the Orion DB is definitely the largest running on the SQL server.
We backup the DB every night and copy the data to a secondary server that is backed up to tape. We do not do any transactional backups though.
