Setup an interface alert based on total Kbps instead utilization percentage

How do I setup interface alerts based on total (in and out) Kbps instead of utilization percentage. Percentage doesn't do me much good if I have a 20 Mbps fiber Internet connection connected to a gigabit interface on my router. It will never hit 75% interface utilization.

You can go into the specific interface and manually set the interface speed to match the actual bandwidth, i.e. set it to 20 Mbit/sec instead of 1000. This way the percentage thresholds and graphing will actually be of some value.

1. Click on the specific interface (brings up Interface Details page).

2. Click on Edit Interface

3. In the Bandwidth section, check the "Custom Bandwidth" box and enter your actual connection speed.

4. Click Submit

On the next poll, the graphs should show your actual percent util with 100% being 20 Mbit/sec.

prawij has the correct answer above. You should adjust the custom bandwidth to match what the actual bandwidth on the link is. Best practice is to create blanket Alerts for everything, and adjust the thresholds (in this case, custom bandwidth) at the monitoring level. Then have the alerts trigger based off thresholds.

However, you can still Alert based on bps rather than utilization by creating a new alert, and at the Trigger Condition screen, choose Interface for "I want to alert on:". In the actual trigger condition, do - "Interface Received bps is greater than xxxx bps", and then another Alert for Transmit bps.
