Business objects server monitoring

is anyone monitoring a Business objects XI 3.1 server?

basically i need to monitor the status of the Cyrstal reports servers running, the only way i've been able to do this is to use a file monitor looking for the PID file associated with the server.

 

any one know of a better way todo this, as i can only monitor if the server is running or stopped, not if its hung or has a warning etc.

Hello Tom,
you can monitor Business Objects processes directly with "Process Monitor - SNMP" or "Process Monitor - WMI" . Use SNMP if available because of less overhead.

Further monitoring can be done using "BusinessObjects monitoring probes" (monitoring guide).

You can run these probes periodically by task scheduler/cron and let these probes generate XML files with monitor data. You can then use "Windows Script Monitor" or "Linux Script Monitor" (depending on platform you use) and parse those files for required data. Or you can run probes directly from within script and get their output instead of writing it to file.

Or you can use these probes in web-based mode. Use "HTTP Monitor" and specify URL with all required parameters for probe (as described in monitoring guide on page 54 - Specifying probe attributes and parameters
dynamically). Then set search keyword in HTTP monitor for example to check that service is up. This method can give you only up/down (or found/not found) status so it's less flexible than using scripts.
