Newbie Question - HP Insight Agents

Hi all,

I'm very new to the Orion family of products and could use a little help getting some basic monitoring/alerting set up.

Currently we use SNMP to poll our HP Proliant servers to monitor the health of the physical server using the following OIDs:

HP Array health -- 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.3.1.3

HP Overall Health -- 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.6.1.3

HP System Health -- 1.3.6.1.4.1.232.2.1.3

considering a constant value of 2 as 'UP' and anything else as 'Down'

I've got the Universal Pollers set up, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to set up an alert that will send out an email when any of these pollers go 'down', indicating the Node name and which specific poller is down.

If there is a better way to monitor the system health via the Insight Management Agent I'm all ears, as I'm pretty new to this stuff.

Odd, I thought I replied to this yesterday but my response isn't here. I guess I will try again...

You can write three alerts, one for each of these values, alternatively you can write a single alert that will cover all of them.

If you want to write one alert for each, go into the Advanced Alert Manager and in the Trigger Condition tab under Property to Monitor you will need to choose Custom Poller. Then configure an alert condition that looks for your poller.

If you want to write a single alert for all of these you will need go into the Trigger Condition and change the top line to say "Trigger Alert when ANY of the following apply", then under that you will have "Trigger Alert when ALL of the following apply" once for each poller with the conditions for that poller. Below I have posted a screenshot of an alert I use for a NetApp that looks at four different pollers...

That is strange, as I got your response earlier this morning in an email notification.

Anyway, I've followed your idea and created an alert for each OID I'm monitoring (I went that route so I could have specific verbage for each event in the email alert, still learning the variables) and am going to do some testing tonight. I apprecieate the help, and will post any appropriate follow up.

Awesome, the alerts appear to be working as expected.

However, now I am wondering, is there any way for to have the nodes status color change based on the pollers status? I t would be nice to have a visual refence to the issue on the NPM home page, or in group status, etc.

Unfortunately, no this isn't currently possible. Alerts are seperate from node status.

Hrm, that does give me a good idea for a feature request; I think I know of a very good and potentially simple way that SolarWinds could implement this. I will post the feature request either later tonight (when I am not taking care of a baby) or tomorrow once I am back at work.
