Custom Alert for Specific Devices

I have a group of about 15 devices that I need to setup a custom alert for. We already have alerts setup for these devices as part of the "Alert me when a node goes down..." trigger. I need to setup another alert for these devices so that the alerts can go to a specific person. I can't add them to the existing alert because I only want them to get alerts for these 15 devices and nothing else.

Also what is the best method for ensuring that when new devices get added/removed they are included as part of this new alert?

Not to dishonor the good name of ecklerwr1 but I would NOT use groups for this purpose (I think Dez will back me up on this).

Instead, I would use custom properties. I would create a property called "DeviceGroup" and then populate it for ALL your devices.

THEN your alert can be coded so:

DeviceGroup = "blahblah" (that would be your special device group name)

Status = DOWN

Perhaps setup a group for them then alert on the group? That's how I do it.

Thanks, I did setup the group and it alerted, but it did not list the node information, it said Node is Unknown. Can you tell me what variables you have in your alert?

As mentioned here Custom Properties is the best solution for this. Then populate that field for the devices in question with the appropriate value (FOO for example) and then you build out a separate alert with a condition that custom property equals FOO... as for the node name it should be ${NodeName} should get you what you want.

I see what you're saying but then you also have to manage customer properties for everything... I think that's one drawback of the current alert generation system... where you have to select either node or group. I have alerts both ways and yes... custom properties.

Well yes and no... so we have a Master Node Down alert that is pretty simple.. Node down for 3 polling cycle and it's down and the trigger action fires.. no custom properties involved.. also have a couple of alerts targeted as specific teams for certain devices with a separate down alert with the Custom Property involved in the trigger condition and a separate email action for the trigger action... so you don't actually have to have the custom properties filled out for every device in this instance, just those devices of interest...
