stale polling info in NPM 10 SP1

Hey folks!

I had a router fail a couple of weeks ago and had to have it replaced. It was VERY handy having the serial number documented on the device page and not having to look it up somewhere.

But, the old device info (the serial number, specifically) is still there. I've tried rediscovering and polling but I haven't been able to make NPM update the info in the Polled Information pane on the Node Details page for the replaced device. Any suggestions? A wrong serial number is worse than no serial number at all, you know?

Is deleting it and readding an option?

Not really. Too much work adding it back into the maps & the alerts, not to mention losing all the historic data on the bandwidth utilization, etc. Kinda' like replacing your garage every time you get a new car, ya' know?

could you (after backing up your DB) simply purge the Serial number information for that node and allow it to rediscover?

Example:

*****Back up your database*****

update

nodes set serialnumber = null where nodeid = put your nodeid here

then in node management tell it to rediscover

Not a bad idea. I'm sure my SQL Admin could delete the Serial number in the database if he could figure out what table it's in. So...you're saying the procedure you wrote would find it by itself and delete it? I guess you're suggesting I back up the database first because we're not sure what NPM would do when the serial number disappeared?

My guess is your suggestion would work fine but you'd think replacing failed devices would be common and there would be an easy way to do this.

I was hoping someone could just show me a way to repoll the device. LIke I said in my original post, I ran a rediscovery and repolled by clicking on both those options on the device page in the web console but the poll information still said the last poll was on 8-5-2010. Maybe if I wait it will run a poll that actually causes an info refresh.

I DO appreciate your suggestions, Captain, and I'll try this one WAY before I just delete the whole entry. Thanks!
