Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Looking for Anwers to Orion
gturrubi
1) Can I modify Thresholds specific to a device or is it a standard threshold for all Orion devices. I would like to modify the thresholds for eah device not have them all at the same thresholds.
2) Unique thresholds per device or is it one threshold screen for all devices.
3) Can I use Compq MIBs or any others?
4) How do I estimate the size of my SQL DB?
5) How do I access the SQL database from a remote machine?
6) Can I archive the older data off to a different location and what is the retention by deault?
7) Can I monitor Linux systems?
8) How do I monitor baseline traffic on a low utilization server?

1) You can only currently modify one threshold setting for a particular statistic. For example on high packet loss you can only have one setting for a threshold. This applies to all devices in regards to packet loss. You can set a different threshold for memory usage but it is global.
** The ability to set separate thresholds for separate devices along with separate notification for separate devices is something I would REALLY like to see in a future release.
2) I think 1/2 were the same question
3) I can't really answer that question. I think if you configure SNMP properly you can pass whatever MIB data you want. Maybe someone else could shed a little more light on this question
4) Estimating the size of your SQL database is tricky since you have so many options on data retention and collection intervals. The more frequently you collect and the longer you keep the data the bigger it will be. I can give you an example of what I am running right now.
I have 4 months worth of data for about 830 elements.
Polling:
Poll Interval for Nodes 60 seconds
Poll Interval for interfaces 60 seconds
Poll Interval for volumes 600 seconds
Rediscovery of resources 30 minutes
Collection
Node stats every 10 minutes
Interface Stats 5 minutes
Volume Stats 30 minutes
Retention:
Detailed stats summarized into hourly after 7 days
Hourly Stats summarized into daily after 35 days
Daily Stats purged after 1095 days
Network events deleted after 90 days
I run maintenance one a week and a SQL DB shrink and other optimization utilities
My current DB size is 380 Megs and it grows about 15-30 Megs per week net. It can grow between 50-200 Megs per week but after optimization is shrinks down for a net growth of 15-30 Megs per week
5) Accessing the DB from a remote machine is easy. Just install the MS Sql Client tools and connect. This works for both full blown SQL and MSDE
6) You can Archive older data but that is something you have to develop yourself as far as I know. I can't remember the default retention period. I think it is 365 days? Anyone? Again you can change this setting in you admin app.
7) If SNMP is configured correctly you should have no problem monitoring Linux. See my post in response to the same question.
