Can APM do this?

I currently run APM v2. We use it right now in it's simpliest form just to watch a few services on several boxes.

But we need it to do more and I am not sure it can. I would like it to montor an "application" by monitoring all its critical peices that would be on different servers.

So for instance lets say I wanted to monitor Orion to make sure it is up and to show/alert it is down or degraded if one of the peices fails. So I would monitor the web server it uses, the DB server it uses, all the Orion processes on the server its on and lets say a core switch it depends on for function.

Is this possible?

In APM 2.0, an Application Monitor is confined to a single server; however, you can still accomplish what you want. Build an Application Monitor for each server and then create an alert for that "service" that will alert you if any of those applications go down. You would then get an alert that says "Server Foo is down".

While that will work for alerting, it won't allow me to create a view where you can see if your Apps are up or down and then click on it to see which portion is failing kind of like a node to interface relationship.

Are there any plans in the near future for APM to function in this way?

Definitely. It's something we plan to add in as soon as possible.
