Report Writer Field Formatting

I am trying to use the field formatting tab in Report Writer, however there are no fields to pick from. How do I get the fields to show up?

Figured it out, you have to execute the sql query and it MUST have at least 1 record.

How does that help when building the query? Im having the same issue. So we have to wait for something to go down to see the fields populate?
