So when my local ISP does certain work on the network it will send alerts to my solarwinds. However, the alerts that I get are stating that my devices are down and they are not. Anyone have this issue?
Need some more info - what exactly is causing it to go down? Packet loss, or something else?
You are getting the down alert because the Solarwinds server can no longer ping the remote device. You need to find out what they are doing. Maybe get them to provide you with a loopback address that you can use for monitoring.
Those aren't false notifications, they are real. Solarwinds isn't testing to see if the device is powered on, it is testing to see if it can communicate with the device. When the ISP does maintenance, it can no longer communicate with the device and therefore it is considered down. If you are concerned about receiving alerts and knowing whether or not they are real, discuss receiving maintenance notifications from ISP if not already being received, and if you desire you may place the respective device(s) in maintenance mode during the window specified.
So it looks like when Cox switches traffic along two paths that is when I am seeing the noitifications from Solarwinds, they are bearly a millisecond change. They do not actually bring down any of my devices but the quick change alerts solarwinds of the disconnect.
Just so we have a clear understanding of what you are talking about, I am referring to an NPM node down alert. Say Solarwinds is sending 5 pings every 120 seconds to the devices. In order to be considered down, it has to fail to respond to all 5. If you are saying when you are pinging these devices from your workstation during the outage and not seeing a single drop, then are you sure the alerts are NPM node down and not possibly routing adjacency alerts or APM alerts or something? If you do not see pings dropped and Solarwinds is, are you are the same location or what could be different from a networking perspective between you and the polling engine?
As per john.ta's message, is it a NPM node down alert, or just an alert of an event that occurred that you are receiving?
Sounds to me, it's NOT a NPM node down alert, but rather a custom alert that alerts you to the fact that something happened.
