Node warning interval adjustment for time of day
ajsburns
Hi,
We have just started using Orion (v7.5) at my workplace. I have been asked by my manager to find out if we can adjust the node warning interval according to the time of day.
Ideally we want it set to, say, 120 seconds during working hours but to nearer 600-900 seconds outside those hours when we don't want to respond to alerts for nodes that go down for just 5 minutes because of maintenance work.
Looking at the forum, the on-line docs, and the system manager on the server, we don't have this flexibility, but I imagine that other people have run into the same problem and I was wondering if they had come up with a solution?
At the moment I am considering creating a scheduled job on the server that updates the registry setting which appears to control this, and then restarts the NetPerfMon service (I assume this step would be necessary)!! Not ideal really.
Thanks in advance,
Alastair

Alastair,
The Node warning interval cannot be adjusted based on the Time-Of-Day within the Version 7 release.
Your assumption about changing the registry setting and restarting the service is correct and will work. (although, I agree, it's definitely not ideal)
A furture release (in development now as Version 8), however, supports Sustained Triggers for Alerts. This would allow you to define one set of Alerts for working hours and another for night time. The first set would set the Sustained Trigger for "Trigger the Alert after the Node has been down longer than 2 minutes". The second Alert would set the Sustained Trigger for "Trigger the Alert after the Node has been down longer than 10 minutes". This is easy in Version 8, but not an option in Version 7.
PS. We are considering making a pre-release of the Version 8 Alert Engine available for use on Orion Version 7 systems before the entire Orion Version 8 is actually available (Version 8 is still a number of months away).

Hi Don,
Thanks for the reply. We have got around the problem by running scheduled tasks that amend the registry & retsart the service as discussed before.
Is there any word on when the pre-release version of the v8 alert engine will be available, and how we would be able to get it?
Thanks again.
Alastair
