SAM Licensed Monitor Count Exceeded

Hi,

I am getting 2 notifications. 1 - You have used more than 90% of your available licenses. 2 - SAM Licensed Monitor Count Exceeded. To solve this, I think, I need to do something with Monitoring Application Templates, but I am not sure how to do this. I cannot do this on an individual node basis, since there are more than 100 nodes. Can anyone please help me how to achieve this, rather solve these errors. My intent is this. All servers need to monitor CPU, Memory, Disk Space. But Web servers also need to monitor IIS status. DB servers also need to monitor SQL and so on. Can anyone please help me with detailed steps?

Can you let us know what specific application templates you have assigned? SAM is licensed using 3 "buckets. If you have a SAM AL300 as an example it would give you 300 Nodes and 300 Volumes and 300 Component monitors.

Node: Basic node information such as CPU/Memory/Disk/Hardware health, packet loss and latency counts against a Node license and not against a component license.
Volume: This includes the actual disk volumes in Windows or Linux. This would be your C: or /root partition. Each volume that needs to be monitored would consume a license.
Component: A component can be a process, a service, a performance counter, a port, an URL, a User Experience Monitor, a Nagios script, and so on.

If you're using the AppInsight for IIS it'll consume 30 component monitors. If you're using the AppInsight for SQL it'll consume 50 component monitors.

Any of the AppInsight templates are awesome, tons of data that they provide.

Thank you for your quick response. Ours is an AL300 license. We have more than 100 servers. For all the servers, we want to monitor CPU, Memory and Disk Space. For DB Servers, we want to monitor SQL Server. For Web Servers, we want to monitor IIS and so on. Can you please tell me how I can check what Application Templates are applied? Also, since we have more than 100 servers, it is difficult to go to each node and update the resources being monitored. That is why, I am asking for help.

Ok. I figured out the navigation to the Mange Templates / Application Monitors. It is Settings --> All Settings --> SAM Settings --> Manage Application Monitors. In this page, I see 3 tabs. In the 2nd tab, i.e., Application Monitor Templates, I see that for AppInsight Application, we have many nodes assigned to the AppInsight for IIS and AppInsight for SQL templates. That is probably the reason why, we are getting these notifications. For AppInsight for IIS, the Licensed Components is 30 and that for SQL, it is 50. What does this mean? Let's say, I have 100 nodes where I want to use AppInsight for IIS and 100 nodes on AppInsight for SQL, does it mean I would use 3000 + 5000 = 8000 licensed components which will be way more than that permitted for AL300?

AL300 is nowhere near the amount you would need.

for 100 Servers you can monitor 3 Components per Server.

CPU + RAM + 1 Disk.

Oh, and yes you are right with your calculation. With SAM it is most of the time ALX (unlimited)

currently I am doing a PoC for a Customer with 38 Servers, and we are just monitoring some basics.

Yes, your math is correct. the AL300 tier is fairly small when it comes to the component monitors. especially when you're using AppInsight templates. If you did an application discovery then it probably added a bunch of bogus templates. It would make sense to audit what is currently assigned (1st tab of the 3) and remote any that are not needed or incorrect. The 2nd tab is where you will assign new templates.
