random SMTP down/up alerts on Exchange CAS servers

At least once a day an alert will trigger for the SMTP service being down on one of our 4 Exchange CAS servers. Most days there are alerts for 2 or 3 of the CAS servers. i have looked on teh CAS servers and have never found the service to actually have stopped and restarted. This is becoming an issue because we have alerting configured to send a text to our cell phones. This morning at 3:30 my phone let me know that the SMTP service was down and then 2 minutes later let me know it was back up. Is this a false alert and if so, why is it limited to the CAS servers?

How often are you polling this service? Is the status in Orion truly reflected as "Down" or is it "Unknown"?

polling every 2 minutes

the status shows as UP - it never shows as going down.

It sounds as though you may be polling too frequently that the rest of the components within the template cannot complete the polling cycle before the next one begins. I suggest increasing the polling value to the default 5 minutes to see if that eliminates these random alerts from occurring.
