Nodes with same ip

Hi everybody,

I'm trying monitoring Websense V10000 appliance which can be monitored natively through SNMP.

The appliance has different features inside which can be monitored singularly through different community strings (ex: public, public-wcg, public-esg, etc.) but listening on the same IP address.

Can I do it? I'm afraid I'm not able to do it without additional polling engine, right?

Simone,

another option is more a hack and IS NOT officially supported by SolarWinds. I strongly recommend to backup your database before doing such experiments.

So here are unsupported steps that should help you to get what you requested:

1. You should manually duplicate proper Node in database table dbo.Nodes (e.g. via Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio - "Edit Top 200 Rows" on a table). Find the row with proper Node, Copy the row and then paste a duplicate row.

2. After you finish step 1, you should be able to see multiply entries of same node in All Nodes resource in Web Console.

3. Edit every duplicated Node and change community string to new one

4. Perform List resources operation against every duplicated Node so proper pollers are correctly assigned (e.g. on Manage Nodes resource)

Steps mentioned above should work, but they may also cause problems to your system and are not officially supported by SolarWinds.

Hi Simone,

it's possible to create multiply scheduled discovery profiled with same IP of your device but with different community strings. Then you can import results and will have several devices with same IP but different community strings in a database.

For better results, I recommend to upgrade to the latest version of NPM 10.2.1 before performing this operation.

I tried... he discovered two nodes but after the import it has created just one node, unfortunately...

Hi Simone,

how did you do import? You should import it twice - one for first profile, another for second profile. If you import all at once it will cause that nodes with same IP address will be considered as duplicate.

I tried even with two separate import operation but nothing to do...

Instead the hack of the SQL database is working perfectly!

I have an issue similar - poll same ip but with different SNMPv3 Context

I am tempted to try this out.
