'Oracle user experience monitor' - port, sid/service and username emdebbed in every monitor

Hey folks,

I relatively new to SW but i've used other monitoring tools before.

I'm trying to create an APM template for monitoring Oracle databases. My aim was to create one template and then assign it out to many oracle instances. However it seems we have to embed the port, service name or sid and username credential to use, in to every monitor within the template. I expected to define the template and then assign it to a database instance, where it would inherit the credential for the system it's assigned to.

Because of this it seems i have to create 1 template for every oracle instance. I have a fair few instances to monitor. I've just created a single template at the moment with all my monitors in it, i think i will have to copy this, rename it 20 times, to create 20 templates, one for each database. Then i have to edit all 20 of these copies and change the service name and port for all 20 monitors for all 19 of the other templates? This is madness surely?

My question is; Is it possible to define the monitors without database services, usernames or port numbers and then assign it a database instance where it picks up the credentials and service/port etc.. Or is the road to madness the only way forward at the moment?

It will also be a real pain to maintain them in future is i have 20 or 50 templates to change everytime.

Hello Simon,
you don't have to create 20 templates for your servers. You can create just one template, specify any credentials, port and instance name you want and then change these for each server individually.

Create your template and fill in all required values (you have to fill also port and instance name, but you change them later). Assign this template to all your servers. Then go to Admin->APM Settings->Manage Assigned Application Monitors. Edit every assigned instance of this template and there on edit page you can overwrite required values such as credentials, port and instance by clicking "Override Template" on the right side of the form.

So you end up with one template defining general values for monitoring and this one template would have overriden port, instance name and credentials on every server it is assigned to.

Thanks very much for your reply. It was very well explained, i've tried it out and i understand what you mean. That is considerably better than i feared. I shall do what you have suggested.

This means i can have just a single template and edit the individual assigned instances.

One problem with this approach is; this will not address the notification issue. You will still get a generic notification that you have in your master template. ie. if I have 1 template monitoring 5 instances on the same database server. I will not be able to generate seperate alert for each instance in the subject line. You will need to copy template and edit the name of the template if you need sepereate email for each instance.

You can rename the application (on application edit page) so it has a different name than its template. Then you can setup alert to trigger only for applications with specific name.
