IIS SMTP Mail Queue Monitor?

Hello,

I need to monitor the \mailroot\queue directory on an IIS server running the SMTP gateway feature. Sometimes this queue gets stuck and mail accumulates silently until we go and "kick it" to start sending queued mail. I've had a good luck around both on Thwack and within APM and I have not found anything that does this. Has anyone come up with a solution?

To monitor your SMTP servers message queue I recommend using the "Browse for Component Monitors" under [Settings -> SAM Settings] and browse for Windows Performance Counters against your SMTP server. I believe the counter you're looking for is under [SMTP Server -> Local Queue Length]. Set the warning and critical thresholds after baselining what's considered "normal" for your environment. You will then be alerted when the number of queued messages exceeds an acceptably reasonable level.
