Encryption

Hello everyone :-)

I would like to know if anyone has an idea of the type of encryption or whether the Orion database is encrypted.
I do hope that things are not stored as plain-text and need to know if this is the case. My Orion server is hooked up with an SQL server so I suspect that things might be okay... but I'm mainly here to get a general idea.

I believe you can set the MS SQL Server to encrypt the data at rest...I believe the feature is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) available since SQL Server 2008.

I'd like for someone from Solarwinds to validate that it is a supported method for encrypted data at rest..

is it possible to run symmetric certificate based encryption with sql 2008 standard edition and NPM 12.1 for encryption at rest as an interim step to upgrading to enterprise 2012 or later SQL using TDE?

Unfortunately not. Without TDE Orion would need to know which columns are encrypted and use “DecryptByKey” when querying those columns. However, if you skip SQL 2012 entirely and go directly to SQL 2016 SP1 you will get TDE in the Standard Edition of SQL and can save yourself a lot of money not buying the Enterprise Edition.
