Hyper-V Host Monitoring

Good morn or evening friends,

Recently I've been re-tasked to resurrect our SAM environment to attempt to get more visibility into our Hyper-V hosts. We are also looking into S2D (Storage Spaces Direct) as well. Does SAM has the cability to give us the full picture of our host/hypervisor servers? Or should I look at SolarWinds' Virtualization Manager product. I don't want to stand up this infrastructure and find out that SAM does not have what we are looking for. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Seeing failed disks and hardware sensors requires you to have the hardware agent for whatever brand of server you use installed, for example on a dell it would be the opemanage, hp insightmanager, etc

You can get a taste of what SAM is able to pull in regarding hyper v from the oriondemo website, http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/Orion/VIM/VIMHyperVSummary.aspx?view=VIM%20HyperV%20Summary

Even without VMAN you would be able to get most of the same data, I'm fairly certain that the primary difference would be that any running VM's that you don't monitor as nodes within SAM would not get their metrics collected. You might want to confirm with support or an account rep as I don't have access to a system without VMAN to test right now.

There is a new product by Microsoft called Project Honolulu https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsserver/2017/09/22/project-honolulu-technical-preview-is-now-available-for-download/ which is in TP stage now but looks quite promising allowing you to manage your Windows-based infrastructure from web. As an alternative there is another interesting free product by StarWind https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-manager that already has decent S2D monitoring/management capabilities and a promising roadmap.

I have SAM stood up and all I really want is to see are physical disk status on the Hyper-V host. Is this a feature only available in VMAN? Or is it something that needs to be toggled on in SAM?

I do have a call scheduled with SolarWinds to talk about SAM monitoring Hyper-V host disk status and hardware. This monitoring piece is the only thing preventing us moving on from VMware.

I've actually just watched the Ignite video discussing Project Honolulu. I've never heard of "Starwind" but I'll look into it. Anything I can get my hands on that does deep monitoring of Hyper-V hosts/clusters.

Did you do a list resources for the hyper v host? There really isn't much difference between a hyperv host and any other windows server when it comes to disk monitoring

I am seeing volumes on disks but I am not seeing physical disks. What I'd like is SAM to see a failed disk and for it to fire off an email telling me what disk and where.
