SMTP notifications outside Domain

This is probably an easy question for you folks but nobody has a straight answer after searching the forums.

My issue is that I can get email notifications but ONLY on the domain the SMTP server is on.

How can I get mail to go to several people outside of the domain NCM is installed.

so as an example: person@domain1.com and person2@domain2.com and even a 3rd domain person3@domain3.com

I am a Network Consultant so I don't get to have an internal email account so I'm forced to use my own email but it's not working. Internal
users who are on the list get their notifications nightly but they are all on the somecompany@luckypeople.com domain while I am on
the person3@domain3.com domain.

Hope this is clear............................................ What am I missing you think?

Couple possibilities that I can think of off the top of my head. Most likely it's the mail server that it's connecting to. Either it doesn't allow mail to leave it's own domain or the mail server's DNS resolver doesn't forward queries to other DNS zones that it isn't authority for.

Either way, I don't think the problem resides with the NPM server.

it may be that the SMTP server is set up to only send internal. try getting with the person who runs the SMTP server...that's the only thing I can think of...

I agree to this. You may want to contact your exchange admin or system admin to allow that SMTP server to relay an email to outside the company domain. they can help you in lest than a minute

I see your point, but if this is true, then wouldn't the organization also Not be able to send mail outside their own organization?

I'm not following the thought.....................

What am I missing? Are you guys suggesting that if I were to send mail to say... @yahoo.com or @google.com or @msn.com I would not be able to? Is this what you mean by mail not able to leave the Domain? If so that's pretty wild of a thought.

You really have to check with your exchange admin/system admin

Does the SMTP Server you use in orion is the same Email Gateway your company used?

Does it used authentication?

Some System Design recommends a separate SMTP server dedicated for relaying emails for reporting servers and/or other monitoring server.

at my shop....
SMTP from Orion is to POP server which has limited access/priveleges.
NORMAL email is through exchange which is open.

different systems managed by different groups and used for completely different purposes.
