Does NPM process SNMP traps?

I am a new NPM user. Does NPM process SNMP traps? If so where. I have not found it.

The short answer is no.

This has been a requested feature for the next release of Orion,
but I don't know if this is in the works or not. I kind of doubt it.

I have asked that same question, and I got this response.

"Within the next release of the Orion Network Performance Monitor (v7),
we plan to include the ability to send TRAPs when alerts trigger and
reset.

We are not planning for the application to be able to receive or collect
TRAPs in this version."

What do others use for receiving Traps and process traps ?

Go get a copy of Kiwi Syslogger www.kiwisyslog.com. Latest version can receive Traps and costs about $50 US, less if you buy more copies. I have been using it is conjunction with Solarwinds for ages now and it really is a fantastic product.

When you say you use it in conjunction with SolarWinds, are you able to view the Kiwi Syslog information in Solardwinds? Or, are you using them concurrently?

I use Kiwi as well. It runs concurrent with Orion on the same server.

No, whilst I do have Kiwi syslogger residing on the same box they are two separate products. Kiwi is very good at alert suppression and root cause analysis based on filters and is able to do a whole host of actions such as Trap, email, execute command etc which Solarwinds Isn't that great at doing yet. It would be great if you could also launch multiple actions from one alert with no need for third party apps or scripts but hey maybe in the next release...whenever that is.

Basically when an event occurs in Orion such as device down I launch (a free) command line utility, also supplied by Kiwi called KLOG which fires a syslog message into Kiwi syslogger containing whatever the event that occurred (see below). Then from within Kiwi syslogger I can set-up all the relevant filters to look for "device is down" and take the appropriate actions such as send email, send Trap etc.

The line looks something like this

klog -u 514 -h x.x.x.x -m "${NodeName} is ${Status}"

I hope this makes sense.

Okay, so Orion doesn't accept traps. Can it be configured to do custom OID get's? I've got some NetApp filers that are only providing a little bit of information via SNMP. According to the vendor, their MIB's do provide the information we're looking for, but that we'd need to do custom get's to retrieve them.

HP NNM is used by most for a trap reciever. We run about 100 routers, 250 switch, and 200+ servers on our network. NNM handles it all like a champ. NNM is also faily inexpensive. SolarWinds is good for very basic SNMP polling, but is really not a big time NMS system.

This is a excellent question. I'm using HP Procurve switches and would like to see the same stats that are proferred when polling other like devices, from... let's say Cisco.
