BGP Status

BGP within our Network (both internal and external) is becoming all pervasive.

Will firewalls sitting in the Network path, it's now not uncommon for a BGP peer to go down without a corresponding interface or router alert.

Currently the only solution Orion offers is alerts generated from the syslog or snmp message, or custom MIB's - both are fairly user unfriendly IMHO.

The indication is that Orion will support custom MIB tables in the next release, which may help a little (although I'm not sure exactly how Orion will present or alert on a MIB table).

Getting to the point....

I would like to see BGP peer status monitoring become integral to a device (i.e a BGP peer to be selected/monitored just as we do today for CPU, Memory, Interface status etc).

Custom MIB Get Table support is critical to the next release, so that's not a maybe. We will allow you to alert on data in tables. Another goal of the release is to substantially increase the ease of use of the custom poller.

Along these same lines,

I'd like to monitor the routing profile table on Cisco Backbone routers (similar to doing a "show ip route summary").

Great to read that new version will have "get mib table", when will the new release be availible ? is there going to be a beta ?

The new release will be in the first half of this year, and there will be a beta. We'll have beta signups when we get a bit closer.

Well Orion V9 is here now.
However, we have since built a new Backbone using OSPF instead of BGP.
I've been search for the IP routing table MIB for the past couple of hours, but have been unable to find it.

If anyone finds the MIB table that displays the summary of the number of routes in the routing table, please post it here.

Try inetCidrRouteNumber (1.3.6.1.2.1.4.24.6) - although beware, I'm not at work to check, and half the time I seem to get these wrong.....

There is also a route discards entry, and a route table available (http://tools.cisco.com/Support/SNMP/do/BrowseOID.do?local=en&translate=Translate&objectInput=inetCidrRouteNumber).
