iPhone app

With iPhone OS 3.0's new feature of push notifrications, I wonder if there could be an action in Alerts to push a message to an iPhone App. I need my Network Monitoring to wake me up at night if there's a problem and the current iPhone notification for email is very quiet. I'd like to change the ringtone to something loud and obnoxious. Is there anything like this on the roadmap? Or does anyone have any suggestions how I might accomplish this?

Have you explored using SMS integration with NPM alerts (using Notepager)? SMS notifications can be set more obnoxiously, I think ;-)

Thanks for the reply, I'd prefer to stay away from regular SMS because I get a lot of other text messages. I'm trying the textfree app right now and while it's better, it's still not very loud.

Get a real business phone like a BlackBerry and you will have no problems. There is a reason Iphones are not prevalent on employer networks and this is one of them.

SMS delivery is quite a bit more reliable than email delivery. Especially through RIM's BES. While the BB is hugely popular, and still has a number of features that smoke the iPhone, almost anything can support SMS notifications, and that's really the broad swath we want to see cut as network admins. If you're BES is down, you need the notifications to wake up the admin. Same is true if the network as a whole is down. So, really, where I'd like to see SW go from a feature standpoint is something like integrating the core components of something like the Kannel project: www.kannel.org/overview.shtml, and with it's BSD licensing, there are virtually no restrictions on commercial re-use and distribution. If SW was feeling particularly generous, they could put a little bit of energy into enhancing it and give back to the project, but I don't know that they have the cycles to spare on that.

From a commercial product standpoint, building a feature that would allow you to plug in a modem and select the appropriate TAP numbers to hit would be pretty hot, although interfacing directly with the SMS network via a USB connected cellular device similar to the Gnokii setup documented here: www.x11.net/.../Setting_up_an_SMS_Gateway would probably be my first choice, because it's pretty cheap and easy to do.
