Hi All,
I'm trying to track the value of a number of Windows Registry Keys (DWord and Binary) for a subset of Windows servers (2003/2008) in our environment that have access to shared tape drives. To minimize inappropriate SCSI Polling certain Registry Keys need to be changed from the default, and some others added, to ensure that servers behave as nicely as possible. Unfortunately there are times when Windows patching resets some of these keys and the Server guys don't really notice, but us backup guys get it "in the neck" when these servers stop behaving appropriately, backups can get seriously affected, and then it's a battle to find which server/s are the potential candidates for creating the problems.
Example DWORD - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\hplto\AutoRun
Example Binary - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\ql2300\Parameters\DriverParameter
My main problem is that my scripting skills are almost non-existent so I'm obviously having some problems with doing this. I've tried looking around on the site and playing with some example scripts but I'm really kidding myself if I think I'm really going to get anywhere as I just don't have enough time in any day to spend on this and the fundamental skills are just not available to me anyway (lots of chimps with lots of typewriters with one lucking out on writing a major novel - this is the type of luck I need to get a working script from my own efforts). It would be really appreciated if someone could provide some assistance to me on setting up a script that I could modify for the various keys that I'm trying to track. I need to look at about 4-5 Registry values and I'm not so interested in alerting so much as just being able to quickly check the current values across a range of servers without having to do the hard yards on a regular basis. I have a feeling that Solarwinds can help me out here and I'm hoping someone out there with the requisite skills will take pity of me.
Any pointers or example scripts that anyone could suggest/provide to help me out here would be greatly appreciated and would definitely brighten up my day a bit. I'm also trying to look at using Group Policy to force these keys/values but with the range of Windows domains involved and the lack of resources available that solution is currently proving a little difficult to get happening in the necessary time frame.
Thanks a lot.
Tim
