I don't belong here, I do not speak the language, I do know enough to be dangerous :-).

I need some insight and a translator.

The company I work for uses Solarwinds APM, I ocassionally get an email notice prefixed with "APM Alert: " and the "Solarwinds" name is ocassionally dropped at teleconferences.

We are using an Oracle Application Server based application and we currently have 5 application servers, 2 of which are production servers. The end user must first be able to connect to the application server (which in turn connects to the Oracle database). The database is always up, but ocassionally the application servers are "down" due to a service or two that are misbehaving.

Is there a way for Solarwinds APM to "test" the application servers to determine their availability to the enduser and provide an alert if not available?

I need to be able to communicate this information to the appropriate people on my end, thanks in advance.

This is exactally what User Experience Monitors do. You can use a "pre-caned" template or even create your own.

Yes, you should be able to use the Orion APM to accomplish this as this is exactly the type of thing it was designed for.

Basically you need to model your application and determine all of the components that need to be tested that will validate that it is in a working state. Once you have done this you can create an application template in APM with all of the components that you determined were necessary. Once this template is built apply it to all of your application servers running that application.
